Gynecologic Ultrasound

Gynecologic ultrasound is an important tool for diagnosing gynecologic conditions. It gives a clear view of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic cavity, including conditions such as uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, and ovarian cysts, helping with early detection and treatment. Besides routine checkups, it is often used to evaluate menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain, infertility, and more. We recommend regular exams for women who need them, to help keep you gynecologically healthy.

Indications & Who It's For

· Routine gynecologic checkup (an annual exam is recommended)

· Menstrual irregularities (irregular cycles, heavy or light periods)

· Menstrual cramps or lower abdominal pain, with suspected adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, or endometrioma

· Abnormal discharge or recurrent infections

· Infertility evaluation (ovulation monitoring, ovarian function assessment)

· Menopausal women (evaluating the uterus and ovaries)

· Suspected ovarian tumor or endometrial abnormality

Types of Ultrasound

1. Transvaginal Ultrasound

How it's done: The probe is gently inserted into the vagina, providing clear images for precise evaluation of the uterus and ovaries

What to know: No full bladder required; high resolution allows assessment of endometrial thickness, follicle development, and ovarian condition

Who it's for: Those who have been sexually active, infertility evaluation, menstrual irregularities

2. Transrectal Ultrasound

How it's done: The probe is gently inserted through the anus into the rectum, providing images as clear as transvaginal ultrasound for precise evaluation of the uterus and ovaries

What to know: No full bladder required; high resolution allows assessment of endometrial thickness, follicle development, and ovarian condition

Who it's for: Those who have never been sexually active, or women for whom a transvaginal exam is not suitable

2. Abdominal Ultrasound

How it's done: The doctor scans the uterus and ovaries with a probe on your lower abdomen

What to know: You need to hold your urine for at least 1 hour so your bladder is full, which improves image clarity

Who it's for: Those who have never been sexually active, or women for whom a transvaginal exam is not suitable

Before Your Exam

Before the exam:

Abdominal ultrasound: hold your urine for at least 1 hour to ensure clear images

Transvaginal and transrectal ultrasound: you may empty your bladder beforehand to avoid discomfort

Gynecologic ultrasound is an important exam for maintaining women's health. We recommend a regular annual exam to help keep your uterus and ovaries healthy.
